Here's another result that is related:

Let C be the candidate opposite the largest side in the candidate triangle
(assuming the triangle is not equilateral).  Then in the Yee/B.Olson diagram for
IRV applied to this candidate configuration, C will be in its own win region for
all sufficiently small standard deviations of the voter distributions, and C 
will be isolated from its win region for all sufficiently large standard
deviations of the voter distributions.
