Comparing ranked versus unranked methods

First, as for the comparison between Plurality & Approval,
Plurality has no advantage in that comparison. Approval is Plurality
with an added voter freedom, Plurality done right.

I don't want to say this too often here, but I often compare
Approval to a reliable & sound handtool. Rank methods are automatic
labor-saving machines. They're supposed to avoid the labor of using
strategy. But IRV is a cheap and poorly-designed automatic machine
that will often go haywire, and do a much worse job than Approval
would have done. Only a very few of the very best rank methods
are as good as Approval.

For the most part, rank methods merely use their more elaborate
balloting to mess up in new, worse ways, with the result that they
aren't nearly as good as Approval. One mustn't expect a carelessly-
chosen rank-count to do an adequate job.
