[EM] French election

Has anyone seen an analysis of the recent election for president of France?
Apparently Chirac, the frontrunner, received less than 20 percent of the vote
in a field of sixteen candidates. Le Pen, the second-placer, upset the
socialist Jospin; he'll face Chirac in the runoff. I'm especially interested
in knowing who the likely sincere Condorcet winner was and who would have been
most likely to win an Approval election. I imagine Le Pen would never have had
a chance in Approval since he polarizes the French electorate so much: his
second-place showing sparked mass protests in Paris. Plurality is a great
system for extremists like him, although the Communists fared very poorly.
