Of course I don't speak for Steve, but it's my understanding that MAM is
used in 2 ways:
As a synonym for Ranked-Pairs(wv)
And, more specifically, as Ranked-Pairs(wv), with equal-defeats dealt with
by considering them in random order.
I believe that the 2nd definition, the more specific one, is how Steve
defines the MAM.
The random solution is probably the best, in terms of criteria compliances,
for the overall method consisting of RP + equal-defeats solution.
To me, if it takes a tie to make a method violate a criterion, that doesn't
seem as imporant as other violations of that criterion. So I'm satisified
with deterministic solutions for equal defeats. The usually proposed one was
named, by Steve, deterministic1. It's how I propose RP. But a more
briefly-worded solution has been proposed too. Not as good, but probably ok
for public proposals, since ties of any kind are vanishingly rare in public
elections.
How I define Ranked Pairs (RP):
In order of stronger defeats first, consider each defeat in turn as follows:
Keep it if it doesn't conflict with already-kept defeats, by forming a cycle
with them-- i.e. by being in a cycle consisting only of it and some
already-kept defeats.
When all defeats have been so considered, a candidate wins if s/he has no
kept defeats.
[end of RP definition]
