Sure, that compromise would be ok: The indices in the testing and 
re-assigning core of the loop
could be re-ordered so as to make more passes unnecessary, so that only 2 
passes would be made. If  the 2nd pass makes no changes, there's no 3rd 
pass. And the fact that the algorithm obviously repeats till no stonger 
beatpaths can be found between any ordered candidate pairs means that it 
still has the same obvious validity that it had before.
