It isn't necessarily "the" dropping rule.  There are differences of opinion.
Personally, I'm undecided - using defeat support seems to make more sense
(and seems to be more democratic), but using margins eliminates some erratic
properties.  It is worth noting, too, that defeat support is more likely to
punish a voter for truncating a vote.  For some time I thought this was an
advantage of defeat support (in that it encourages full rankings, and
therefore political participation), but I no longer believe that this is the
case.
