Using a "random society" model, about 8% of three-candidate elections,
24% of 5-candidate elections, and about 48% of 10-candidate elections
will lack a Condorcet winner (Merrill, 1988).
To the extent that candidates can be placed on an n-dimensional spatial
model, frequency of cycles should be much lower (~1-2% for 5-candidate
elections).
Merrill estimates that a realistic model is somewhere in between.
