The Schulze method (but not MAM or River) has the property that the
winner is always chosen from that set X where the strongest win of
a candidate outside set X against a candidate inside set X is as
weak as possible.

The above property of the Schulze method is also the reason why the
worst pairwise defeat of the Schulze winner is usually weaker than
the worst pairwise defeat of the MAM winner. Norman Petry, Jobst
Heitzig, and Barry Wright confirmed this in their simulations.
Therefore, the above property is not purely academic.
