Matt:
I've voted in a fair number of polls (among voting systems and among presidential candidates).
A few of the polls used only rank-balloting, but most used rank-balloting, Approval balloting,
and ratings.
I didn't find the rankings to be at all difficult. We all know which candidates we like more
than which other ones. What's difficult about that?
I found sincere ratings to be difficult.
In fact, when I rated as sincerely as I could, people accused me of strategizing,
because of my quite high opinion of some candidates, and my quite low opinion of some other
candidates.
I've said that Approval would be fine. It would be a great thing to get.
But the best rank methods bring more guarantees, more protections.
As I mentioned, Approval meets FBC, but MMPO, while meeting FBC, also meets SFC,
and doesn't fail in either of the examples that I've just posted in a thread entitled
"Let MMPO solve its ties. It chooses A in the example.
The simplest is the best."
