Couldn't the "center squeeze" effect could be removed by using 
STV/Condorcet hybrids like CPO-STV 
(http://wiki.electorama.com/wiki/CPO-STV) or STV-CLE 
(http://wiki.electorama.com/wiki/STV-CLE)?
