Why "for" the lower candidates?

Since the lower choices are in the lower half of the rankings it follows
that most of them count as votes AGAINST the lower candidates, contrary to
Donald's statement.

For example consider candidate D in the ranking

A>B>C>D>E .

This ballot contributes (to the pairwise count) three votes against D and
only one for D.
