Ventura closes governor's mansion

Gov. Jesse Ventura closed the mansion and laid off its staff Tuesday, 
saying state legislators left him with no choice after cutting his 
office and security budgets earlier this year. 

***

The tempest over the building began in February when legislators enacted 
a budget over Ventura's veto that cut $1.3 million from the $9.3 million 
budget for the governor's office. Ventura's aides said it would take 
$375,000 to run the mansion through the rest of the fiscal biennium that 
ends in June 2003.
