I don't think most of us claim that simple addition is necessarily the
best way to find group utility, but it's a plausible rough estimate.  A
mediocre utility may not distinguish between a situation where all
voters are lukewarm, and one where two factions violently disagree, but
would anyone deny that either of these situations is still somewhere
between unanimous acclaim and unanimous rejection?
