I noted a few days ago that candidates may die which is one reason to have
YES/NO votes. A real event ---

Carnahan Will Remain On Ballot

.c The Associated Press

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) - It's too late to remove Gov. Mel Carnahan's name
from the Nov. 7 ballot, despite his death in a plane crash.

The legal deadline for changing the ballot was last Friday. That means
Carnahan will still appear as the Democratic nominee challenging Republican
Sen. John Ashcroft.

If Carnahan wins, acting Gov. Roger Wilson, a Democrat, will appoint someone
to the seat after Ashcroft's term ends Jan. 3. The replacement would serve
until the next general election, in November 2002.

The most recent poll, taken for the St. Louis Post-Dispatch during the first
week of September, gave Ashcroft 45 percent and Carnahan 43 percent, within
the 4-point margin of error.

A write-in candidate still could enter the race, but state officials called
that impractical on such short notice.

The next governor won't be sworn into office until Jan. 8. Democratic State
Treasurer Bob Holden and GOP Rep. Jim Talent are running to succeed Carnahan,
who was constitutionally limited to two four-year terms.
