Washington State County to Test Internet Voting; Voters in Thurston County
Set to Participate in First Ever County-wide Internet Voting Test for a
National Election
THURSTON COUNTY, Wash.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Nov. 22,
1999--VoteHere.net(TM), the secure Internet voting company, will conduct a
parallel, non-binding Internet election in Thurston County on Tuesday,
February 29, 2000, for Washington state's Preference Presidential Primary.
The pilot study, directed by county auditor Sam Reed, will allow voters
to use VoteHere.net's secure election system to cast a non-binding parallel
ballot from the convenience of their homes, offices or selected poll sites.
The purpose of the study is to evaluate secure Internet voting in Washington
by providing voters the chance to experience the process and officials the
opportunity to observe reaction to it.
"The Thurston County Auditor's Office has pioneered vote-by-mail,
Internet voter information and electronic voters' guides," said Reed. "The
next logical step is online voting. In my opinion, this study will be a key
step to the historic launching of the new digital era for our American
democratic process."
Voters throughout the county, after completing their binding vote, will
be given two options to partake in the non-binding, secure Internet
election.
Participants may cast their parallel vote at computer stations in designated
poll sites or choose to vote from their own computer at home or work.
"This study marks the first ever county-wide Internet voting test, as
well as the first for a national election," said Jim Adler, VoteHere.net's
founder and CEO. "Participants in nine tests already completed have
overwhelmingly expressed their support for Internet voting by margins of 4
to
1."
